EU Legal Sources, Legal Informatics and Legal Tech within JMC EECL Teaching
Assistant Professor Marija Vlajković delivered 18 teaching hours in the summer semester of each of the 2023/2024, 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic years, amounting to 54 hours within JMC EECL.
In 2025/2026, as in the preceding two project years, 13 hours focused on sources and databases of European Union environmental and climate change law and policy. Within Legal Informatics, students developed the knowledge and practical skills required to locate legislation, case law and other legal sources, including the Official Journal of the European Union, EUR-Lex and the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union. Teaching combined practical demonstrations with students’ independent work using digital legal sources.
The remaining five hours were delivered through the activity European Environmental and Climate Change Law and Policy for Non-Lawyers. The content was intended for students from other faculties and participants without formal legal education, enabling them to understand the foundations of EU environmental law and policy, their influence on national law, and the possibilities for protecting rights in environmental decision-making procedures.
The teaching was not limited to the use of legal databases and Legal Tech tools. It also addressed the relationship between the digital and green transitions, including the opportunities and limitations associated with blockchain, smart contracts and other digital technologies in achieving climate neutrality, energy efficiency and environmental protection, as well as the environmental impact of crypto-mining.
The experience and materials developed through these activities contributed to the modernisation of Legal Informatics and the development of the new Legal Tech course. JMC EECL thereby supported the digital transformation of legal education while also enabling critical assessment of how digital tools may advance the green transition or create new environmental risks.
