Environmental Justice and Access to Justice: Judicial Training in Georgia

A series of workshops was delivered in July 2024 within the UNDP project “Improving the Rule of Law and Access to Justice for All”, funded by the Government of Germany.

As an international expert, Prof. Dr Mirjana Drenovak-Ivanović developed and facilitated a programme tailored to the needs of Georgian judges, in cooperation with local expert Ana Beridze. Participants represented different levels of the judiciary, including the Supreme Court of Georgia and the Judicial Academy.

Scenario-based cases were used to analyse the legal, social and ethical aspects of environmental problems and develop dispute-resolution strategies. A train-the-trainer component equipped selected judges to deliver future training activities independently.

The programme was based on interactive work in which participants used scenario cases to connect legal rules with factual assessment, evidence and ethical dilemmas. The training-of-trainers component enabled the methodology to continue within Georgia’s national judicial-training system. The experience was relevant to JMC EECL work on problem-based teaching and materials for the professional development of judges.
