Oslo Guest Lecture, September 2025

Sustainable Business, Corporate Accountability and Climate Justice

The guest lecture was delivered at the University of Oslo Faculty of Law on 30 September 2025 within the Sustainable Business, Finance and Circular Economy course.

Prof. Dr Mirjana Drenovak-Ivanović presented principles of international environmental law, instruments of corporate accountability and mechanisms for access to justice in climate litigation. The analysis covered ECtHR case law and the advisory opinions of the International Court of Justice, International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

The lecture examined states’ due-diligence obligations, regulation of private actors and duties concerning climate mitigation and adaptation. Delivered within Circle U., the activity continued cooperation between the University of Belgrade Faculty of Law and the University of Oslo in sustainability law.

Connecting the three advisory opinions enabled states’ climate obligations to be examined across international environmental law, the law of the sea and human-rights law. Particular attention was given to the implications of due diligence for regulating corporate activities and access to judicial protection. The lecture contributed to JMC EECL teaching materials on contemporary international climate change law.
