Nuclear Energy and Future Generations: Who Decides?
The Konrad Adenauer Foundation Alumni Club panel was held in May 2026.
Prof. Dr Mirjana Drenovak-Ivanović joined Marina Kostić Šulejić, Slobodan Bubnjević and Dejan Glišić in discussing responsibility for nuclear-energy decisions and their long-term consequences.
Her contribution focused on public participation in nuclear decision-making. Decisions cannot be reduced to technical calculations and energy security; they must also address democratic legitimacy, environmental risk, human rights, public trust and responsibility towards future generations.
The panel addressed legal responsibility at a time of intensifying debate in Serbia about the future role of nuclear energy. Public participation was examined as a process that must begin before key decisions are taken and must include access to expert information, consideration of alternatives and transboundary effects.
