Twenty Years of Implementing the Aarhus Convention in Serbia
The Environmental Law Clinic lecture addressed new forms of access to information, public participation and access to environmental and climate justice.
October 2024: Clinic alumni and legal practitioners Hristina Vojvodić and Veljko Milošević presented the foundations of the Aarhus Convention, the practice of the European Court of Human Rights and the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection, and examples of misuse of access-to-information requests.
The second part covered planning procedures, public hearings, restrictions on public participation and practical difficulties faced by individuals and organisations. The lecture concluded with discussion of domestic experience.
The participation of alumni as lecturers demonstrated how the Clinic connects generations of students and brings professional experience into teaching. Examination of concrete information requests and procedures through which the public seeks to influence decisions enabled students to distinguish formal availability of rights from their effective implementation. The material contributed to teaching on access to justice and human rights in environmental matters.
