Environmental Litigation and Collective Redress within JMC EECL Teaching
Associate Professor Branka Babović Vuksanović delivered six teaching hours in the summer semester of each of the 2023/2024, 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 academic years, amounting to 18 hours within JMC EECL.
In 2025/2026, as in the preceding two project years, teaching was organised as a one-day intensive course on environmental litigation for master’s and doctoral students. It addressed legal protection in environmental matters under civil-procedure rules, actio popularis, comparative models of collective redress, collective and organisational claims, and the role of associations, civil society organisations and ombudsperson institutions.
The course examined challenges concerning collective redress in Serbia, access to justice for citizens, consumers and environmental defenders, and the influence of litigation and enforcement on environmental policy. By connecting national rules with comparative approaches, students considered legal mechanisms for protecting collective interests in disputes extending beyond the position of an individual claimant.
Content developed within JMC EECL was also connected with the compulsory Civil Procedure course. Environmental litigation and climate change law issues were thereby incorporated into a broader procedural-law framework and presented to students who do not attend specialised environmental-law courses.
