Seminar on ESG Standards

Meaning and Objectives of Environmental Standards within ESG Business Criteria

The two-day seminar was held at the University of Belgrade Faculty of Law on 11 and 12 December 2023, with the support of the OSCE Mission to Serbia.

The programme connected human rights and environmental due diligence, the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans and CBAM, the EU Taxonomy, the energy transition, waste management and ESG in insurance. Participants also examined corporate sustainability due diligence in practice, stakeholder engagement, sustainability reporting, the circular economy and value-chain emissions.

A separate part of the seminar addressed corporate liability in the mining industry and the impact of EU sustainability policy on the Western Balkans. The seminar enabled master’s and doctoral students and E-L-C Hub participants to consider regulatory change together with the legal, business, ethical and social aspects of implementation.

Speakers from public administration, legal practice, the energy sector, insurance and corporate management explained how ESG requirements operate across different industries. Students were therefore able to compare regulatory obligations with the ways in which companies assess risk, organise value chains and prepare sustainability reports. The seminar implemented the interdisciplinary strand of JMC EECL teaching on the green transition, corporate accountability and the application of EU law in business practice.
